Shimano freehub replacement

Tools required:

  • 15mm cone spanner;
  • 17mm open ended or ring spanner; and
  • 10mm allen key.

Procedure

  • undo non-drive side (left side) axle end nut using 15mm cone spanner and 17mm spanner;
  • remove both 17mm end nut and 15mm cone;
  • withdraw axle from hub taking care not to lose any of the loose ball bearings from either side of the hub;
  • insert 10mm allen key into centre of freehub and undo freehub;
  • freehub may be on very tight, so its often easier to clamp allen key in vice and rotate wheel for more leverage.
